Yes, you read that right. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 28, as Latinitas, in partnership with AT&T and Human-I-T, will be distributing 125 refurbished laptops to Austin students in need. The event, which will take place at the Latinitas office starting at 8:30 AM, was inspired in part by Latinitas longstanding promise to empower students through technology. As City Council Member and former Latinitas Board Member José Velásquez, put it, “As we all know, robust and reliable internet connections – and the tools to harness their power – are critical for our families, businesses, and students. These tools and technologies increase educational and economic opportunities and help level the playing field for local students as we all compete in an ever-connected world.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “almost 2.8 million households and 7 million people in Texas lack broadband access.” Thankfully AT&T and Human-I-T are looking to change that, and while this event at Latinitas will be a huge step, it’s only a small fraction of both organizations’ efforts. Latinitas has been at the forefront of this change for over twenty years now, offering digital literacy in the form of its programs and clubs, on top of distributing laptops throughout the years. And with AT&T’s Connected Learning Initiative, “AT&T is committing $5 billion to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030.”
So join Latinitas, AT&T, and Human-I-T Saturday, September 28 for an event filled with community, empowerment, and celebration!
