Born out of the need to increase the representation of Latina and other girls of color in media and technology, Latinitas has a long-history of pivoting and adapting quickly to social and economic trends and now, for the first time, a pandemic. Almost immediately following the call for shelter in place Latinitas began moving its in person programming to a virtual space – producing video lessonsย so girls could do activities at their own pace in STEM, production and even a lesson celebrating Chinese traditions – to combat attacks on Chinese people publicly and personally.ย Shortly after, Latinitas got a jump on Austin ISD’s tech survey and got devices to girls in Latinitas without and moved its clubs to a zoom meeting format and continues to assess the needs of its 2000+ program participants a year.ย ย
For safe distancing, Latinitas has shifted all its upcoming summer programming June 1 – Aug 30 to a remote learning structure including:
Camp Latinitas – register for a 2-hour morning or afternoon session throughout July (girls 9-14)
Code Chica coding certification (week long) – in the summer this web development certification program is condensed to a daily meetup (as opposed to a weekly one during the school year).ย (teen girls 14-18)
Future Chica Conference – Latinitas signature one day conference will take place over the course of a 1/2 a day.
Media Chicas journalism certification – Latinitas newest program will start a new session in June (teen girls 14-18)ย
